U8 – FUNdamentals Stage (Learn to Ski / Learn to Play)
Target Age: 6–7
ACA LTAD Stage: FUNdamentals
Program Purpose
The U8 program introduces young athletes and families to alpine skiing through a fun, play-based environment that emphasizes enjoyment, confidence, and fundamental movement skills. This stage aligns with ACA’s FUNdamentals principles, where developing a lifelong love of sport is the priority.
Athlete Development Focus
Athletes build a broad base of fundamental movement skills (balance, agility, coordination) and foundational skiing skills through games, exploration, and varied terrain. There is no emphasis on results or performance comparison.
On-Snow Training
- Emphasis on free skiing, games, and guided discovery
- Exploration of varied terrain to develop balance and adaptability
- Introduction to basic ski racing elements in a playful, low-pressure way
Technical Skills
- Athletic stance and balance
- Speed control through terrain and turn shape
- Introduction to edging and rotary movements
Physical Literacy
- Running, jumping, hopping, and sliding movements on snow
- Development of coordination and spatial awareness
- Activities aligned with age-appropriate growth and attention spans
Tactical & Cognitive Development
- Following directions and simple rules
- Learning to ski safely with others
- Developing confidence and independence
Competition & Events
- Informal club events and skill-based activities
- No emphasis on timing, ranking, or results
Equipment
- Properly sized skis, boots, and helmets
- Equipment set up to support easy turning and balance
Athlete Wellbeing & Safety
- Warm, positive coaching environment
- Frequent breaks and attention to fatigue
- Focus on fun and emotional safety
Parent Role
- Support a positive attitude toward learning and effort
- Encourage independence and enjoyment
- Trust the long-term development process
Program Schedule
Begins with Christmas Camp in December (included in your program fee) and concludes with the Sun Peaks Festival in March. Additional spring skiing at Whistler in April and May may be organized.
- Weekend Training: 7:15 AM – 2:30 PM
- Weeknight Training: 5:30 PM – 8:30 PM
Registration Options
- U8: Saturday OR Sunday + Tuesday OR Thursday night skiing
- U8+: Saturday AND Sunday + Tuesday OR Thursday night skiing (additional fee; available to skiers born in 2015 or 2016 and older)

Grouping decisions made by U8 coaches, approved by Head Coach & Program Director
Race Opportunities: Moderate focus on racing, emphasizing team success. Race fees not included in program cost.
U8 racers invited to December Club Race and April Tyee Day

Tyee Family Membership - $485
U8 Regular Program Fee - $1799 (1 weekday evening and 1 weekend day)
U8 Plus Program Fee - $2024 (1 weekday evening and 2 weekend days)
